What is Hospice?

Hospice care often raises the question, "What is it?" Many people find themselves unclear about its true nature.

Hospice care embodies comfort, relief, and support tailored to the unique needs of each patient throughout their journey, whether it spans days or months. It focuses on the person, not just the disease, to improve quality of life.

At the heart of hospice care is a commitment to placing the patient at the center, ensuring their wishes and those of their loved ones are met with compassion and respect. To adapt to these evolving needs, Medicare-certified hospice providers deliver four distinct levels of care: routine home care, continuous home care, general inpatient care, and respite care. Each level of care is designed to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients, providing comprehensive support that enhances their well-being during this critical time.

  • Comprehensive Care
  • Education & Training
  • Pain Management
  • Emotional & Spiritual Support
  • Individualized Symptom Management

It's crucial to clarify what hospice is not; it does not aim to hasten death. At Oasis Hospice, the focus is on cherishing the remaining moments of life and ensuring the utmost comfort for the patient.

I cannot say enough good things about Oasis Hospice. The care my sister received through her the final journey here on earth was absolutely outstanding. I believe one of the factors that separates Oasis Hospice from other hospice agencies is that they are a private organization and not a corporation. You could truly feel and see their team efforts to address any and all situations without getting hung up in corporate policies and bureaucracy. It was truly a blessing to witness first hand.

What Does Hospice Care Include?

Routine home hospice care
The most prevalent form of support takes place in the patient's chosen environment—be it a private home, nursing facility, or residential care. When symptoms are manageable, hospice team members make regular visits to offer comfort, dignity, and practical assistance, including pain management, medical supplies, and emotional support for both patients and caregivers.

Continuous home hospice care
This is a temporary solution provided during medical emergencies to prevent hospitalization and stabilize the patient. This level of care ensures that a hospice professional is available in the home for extended hours, delivering intensive symptom management and support when severe pain or distress arises.

General inpatient hospice care
This is utilized when a physician determines that a patient requires short-term, intensive management of pain or symptoms that cannot be effectively managed at home. Once symptoms are under control, the patient can transition back to routine hospice care in their familiar surroundings.

Respite care
This offers family caregivers a much-needed break from their responsibilities, allowing them to recharge or address urgent matters. During this time, patients can receive care in a contracted facility or inpatient hospice unit for up to five days, ensuring they are well looked after while their caregivers take time for themselves.
